Product Description
Patterned on the outstanding success of I Love a Cop, this is the first book of its kind written exclusively for fire fighters and their families. Challenging two-dimensional stereotypes, Dr. Ellen Kirschman portrays fire fighters as they really are: complex men and women doing one of the world's toughest jobs and trying to fit comfortably into two families-the one at the firehouse and the one at home. I Love a Fire Fighter takes us on a journey from stationhouse to four-alarm blaze, from a harrowing ride with paramedics to a family dealing with shift work. Along the way, Dr. Kirschman addresses occupational health and safety issues along with domestic concerns including unpredictable schedules, lack of communication, and anxiety. Vivid anecdotes and practical tips show families how they can pull together when job stress threatens to spill over onto home turf, and shed light on what spouses and partners can do to help themselves, their mates, and their children live with the "best job in the world."

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for fire families   June 10, 2010
JS
My husband is a firefighter and this book hit the nail on the head about the issues a firefighter faces and the ways in which it impacts his/her family. I felt the tips at the end of each chapter, for both the family members and the firefighter, were very useful. Also, some of the topics she covered were eye-opening to me. My husband and his co-workers have always had a very (what I found to be) inappropriate attitude towards death. I can't tell you how many jokes I've heard that were in poor taste. Now, after reading the book, I understand the humor as a defense mechanism and a way to distance oneself from the situation. The most valuable insight the book provides is learning to listen, learning how to be there for your loved one without prying or being needy, and not to be offended when you may not be capable of understanding him/her the way the fellow firefighters do. I read this book a while after reading "The Fireman's Wife" and hope that she has had the opportunity to read this book, as then maybe she won't continue to be so negative about the profession. This book does a great job of highlighting the challenges and the wonderful aspects a family will encounter. On a side note, I did not find the book to be biased against women firefighters in the least. I thought she did an excellent job of being sure to include both genders' views and even had a chapter devoted to what its like to be a woman in the fire service and what it is like to have a coworker who is female firefighter. I know that some men in the fire service are biased against women, but traditionally firefighting has been a male dominated field. It is natural to have some friction as changes begin to take place. I do not think the author discussing that friction and some of the attitudes is her choosing sides or being against a female firefighter.

2 out of 5 stars I lost interest   March 10, 2010

I have read lots of books written by spouses of firefighters, and was disappointed in this one. It really failed to hold my interest. I never did finish reading it.

Very helpful to the family of firefighters. The Dr. Spock of what to know and do about living with one.

5 out of 5 stars I Love a Firefighter   December 21, 2008

Excellent book for anyone who has a firefighter in their family. It explains many things you may not be aware of in the daily life of a firefighter. Good for all members of the family to read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource   December 13, 2008
A. Windrem (Windsor, CA USA)
This is a wonderful book for anyone with a firefighter in their family. It is full of practical information as well as background on the culture and history of the fire fighting profession. The list of tips at the end of each chapter is really helpful. I was first recommended the "I love a Cop" book by this same author when I was seeing a therapist a few years ago for some guidance in my relationship with my husband firefighter. I liked that book, but was delighted to discover a book specifically for firefighters. It's also a good resource for the firefighter himself (or herself) - not just for the family outside the firefighting profession. Fire departments would do well to purchase a copy of this book for all new hires.
