Amazon.com Review
"Psychopaths are social predators who charm, manipulate, and ruthlessly plow their way through life, leaving a broad trail of broken hearts, shattered expectations, and empty wallets. Completely lacking in conscience and in feelings for others, they selfishly take what they want and do as they please..." In Without Conscience Robert Hare argues convincingly that "psychopath" and "antisocial personality disorder" (a psychiatric term defined by a cluster of criminal behaviors) are not the same thing. Not all psychopaths are criminals, he says, and not all criminals are psychopaths. He proposes a psychopathy checklist that includes emotional/interpersonal traits such as glibness, grandiosity, lack of guilt, and shallow emotions, as well as social deviance traits such as impulsiveness, lack of responsibility, and antisocial behavior. His writing is lucid and illustrated with numerous anecdotes. The final chapter, "A Survival Guide," is especially recommended: as Hare writes, "Psychopaths are found in every segment of society, and there is a good chance that eventually you will have a painful or humiliating encounter with one."

Product Description
Most people are both repelled and intrigued by the images of cold-blooded, conscienceless murderers that increasingly populate our movies, television programs, and newspaper headlines. With their flagrant criminal violation of society's rules, serial killers like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy are among the most dramatic examples of the psychopath.

Individuals with this personality disorder are fully aware of the consequences of their actions and know the difference between right and wrong, yet they are terrifyingly self-centered, remorseless, and unable to care about the feelings of others. Perhaps most frightening, they often seem completely normal to unsuspecting targets--and they do not always ply their trade by killing.

Presenting a compelling portrait of these dangerous men and women based on 25 years of distinguished scientific research, Dr. Robert D. Hare vividly describes a world of con artists, hustlers, rapists, and other predators who charm, lie, and manipulate their way through life. Are psychopaths mad, or simply bad? How can they be recognized? And how can we protect ourselves? This book provides solid information and surprising insights for anyone seeking to understand this devastating condition.

the ruling class is totally sociopathic and refuses to include a psychopath in the DSM-4

because then they'd have to put them in the Priory.

Dr. Robert Hare opens to the layman the world of the psychopath without burying him in technical overload. Well done!

I have lost count of how many copies of this book I've purchased. I have sent this book to two of my children and numerous friends. It should be required reading for college age young people. When you worry that your a young person is not choosing their friends carefully enough, this is the book to give.
This book is not written using too many psycological definitions and is very readable for the average person. It is compelling, and makes note of many characteristics of a sociopathic personality that the average person is not aware of. I sent this to a younge man in jail for an offence he was charged with that he did not actually commit, but none the less was with the perpetrators. He was in awe of the book. Opened his eyes to say the least. Today we seem to put too much emphasis on whether or not an individual is "on drugs" when drugs are used by people who are sociopaths as well. I worked for the prison system and it is shocking how many test as a sociopathic personality.

5 out of 5 stars Very Enlightening   January 8, 2010

I had a friend when I was a teenager who's behavior I alway found to be quite fascinating. He seemed to have no inhibitions and managed to sleep with a new girl every other week. He was a habitual liar and would tell you anything. He committed a wide variety of crimes and was in and out of juvenile detention, jail and prison from the age of 14. He was also a blast to hang around with - extremely charismatic, funny and exciting and I'm very lucky I didn't end up in prison with him. After reading this book, things started to become a little clearer. I'm no psychiatric professional, but it seems to me that he lacked a sense of conscience. He knew right from wrong and just didn't care. Where this person is today I don't know, but I would bet money he is in prison.

If you have ever had someone's behavior perplex you and you just couldn't figure out how some one could act the way they do without regard for anyone else, this book may clear things up a bit. We live among people (3% or 1 in 33 people you see every day) who are incapable of feeling guilt. These folks are extremely dangerous and really create major problems for the rest of us. They range from Jeffery Dalmer to an average functional office worker who will stop at nothing to ingratiate himself to his superiors while making things impossible for everyone else. I think this book should be required reading for everyone in the criminal justice system as it points out that there is no answer for dealing with these people other than separating them form society. No therapy or rehabilitation will work - they just figure out how to manipulate the system for their own advantage. Society really is filled with machine like predators who would have no second thought about hurting you or your family because they can't. This well written book is truly enlightening and horrifying at the same time. All you can do is look for the warning signs and be fully prepared to protect yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Beware Women   November 29, 2009

A very important book for all women especially ones that are alone. From my past.......I have to keep reminding my self that I miss the illusion not the real person. The sweet words, compliments, and empty promises. The person that you have been waiting for your whole life. He was and is a psychopath and will always be.... I am very concerned that other women alone might be meeting this kind of person, especially on dating sites.....just being needy sets you up for a psychopath...and I was not needy....but got caught, anyway.....he worked very hard to get close to me and you know what, he succeeded for a while.....but the weird flags kept coming up....the blank look in the eyes puzzled me....Many times I felt that this man was from a different planet. I was so very glad that I heard of and read the book, "Without Conscience." It helped me to understand and to make sure that he never came back into my life and to be aware and on guard the rest of my life...I intend to tell every lonely woman I know about the book as it is essential to know about these people out there looking to prey on us. They are only looking to help themselves not us. Not capable of love or any other kind of feelings. Beware Women for here he comes trying to get another one to use or hurt in many ways.
