Amazon.com Review
"Psychopaths are social predators who charm, manipulate, and ruthlessly plow their way through life, leaving a broad trail of broken hearts, shattered expectations, and empty wallets. Completely lacking in conscience and in feelings for others, they selfishly take what they want and do as they please..." In Without Conscience Robert Hare argues convincingly that "psychopath" and "antisocial personality disorder" (a psychiatric term defined by a cluster of criminal behaviors) are not the same thing. Not all psychopaths are criminals, he says, and not all criminals are psychopaths. He proposes a psychopathy checklist that includes emotional/interpersonal traits such as glibness, grandiosity, lack of guilt, and shallow emotions, as well as social deviance traits such as impulsiveness, lack of responsibility, and antisocial behavior. His writing is lucid and illustrated with numerous anecdotes. The final chapter, "A Survival Guide," is especially recommended: as Hare writes, "Psychopaths are found in every segment of society, and there is a good chance that eventually you will have a painful or humiliating encounter with one."

Product Description
Most people are both repelled and intrigued by the images of cold-blooded, conscienceless murderers that increasingly populate our movies, television programs, and newspaper headlines. With their flagrant criminal violation of society's rules, serial killers like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy are among the most dramatic examples of the psychopath.

Individuals with this personality disorder are fully aware of the consequences of their actions and know the difference between right and wrong, yet they are terrifyingly self-centered, remorseless, and unable to care about the feelings of others. Perhaps most frightening, they often seem completely normal to unsuspecting targets--and they do not always ply their trade by killing.

Presenting a compelling portrait of these dangerous men and women based on 25 years of distinguished scientific research, Dr. Robert D. Hare vividly describes a world of con artists, hustlers, rapists, and other predators who charm, lie, and manipulate their way through life. Are psychopaths mad, or simply bad? How can they be recognized? And how can we protect ourselves? This book provides solid information and surprising insights for anyone seeking to understand this devastating condition.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended   August 10, 2010
Cris Roberts (Houston TX)
I was married to one for 19 years. I knew something was wrong but couldn't put a 'label' or a 'finger' on it. I realized too late. I was dealing with a psychopath/sociopath but was willing to endure the pain he sent my way, I guess because I just didn't want to give up on him. What I didn't realize is what he had done to our daughter. She came to me and yes it 'is' what you think she said to me. I took my little girl and moved out, called the police and he is in jail. This book has little to do with pedophilia, but it did help me to recognize the...what I call the 'foundation' of something being very, very wrong. I'm also better at recognizing the psychopath qualities in other people and I avoid them like the plague; because that's what they are.

5 out of 5 stars A must read   July 27, 2010

If you are reading this review, you must be looking for answers. You are probably at the end of your rope, desperately questing for a life-line. Someone has invaded your life and left it in shreds and you want to know if you will ever be able to recover from the devastation. You want to know if you are the only one or if there are others who have also been victimized like you because there is a fundamental commiseration in numbers. You might still be wondering if all of what has happened wasn't your fault, as you have been told. Be consoled that if you are sinking under the weight of all the blame, you probably are not at fault, other than being gullible enough to fall for the lies. The most frustrating aspect of dealing with an APD is clearly seeing the truth, grasping that there is most certainly something not "normal" and yet not being able to get others to see it, which leads to serious self-doubt. This simply confirms that you have a conscience because those who have no conscience can never feel self-doubt.

Cutting to the chase, this book does offer up answers, if nothing else it lends a hand up to understanding the deviant workings of the brain of someone with Antisocial Personality Disorder. Understanding is the first key to successfully doing battle with and overcoming an APD. I am grateful to Dr. Hare for his career long determined commitment to shine light on this difficult to diagnose mental disorder. This book, based on Dr. Hare's relentless research, is an easy read, departing from what could have become a dry academic tome opting instead to more of a conversational explanation, as though he was sitting with me, walking me gently through this complex topic.

I came away with both encouragement that there are things you can do, if you understand that APDs have inherent weaknesses hidden inside what appears to be their strengths, and discouragement facing the truth that the numbers of those with personality disorders are expanding, many ending up in prison, but just as many capable of flying under the radar enough to stay out, preying on the unsuspecting, ravaging and then flying stealth unfazed and unencumbered to find a fresh victim. I also came away with the angst of realization that the disturbing story of the psychopaths among us, in every walk of life, from the next door neighbor to the politician running for office, is a frightening commentary on the decline of civilization, the benchmark being when lies are more acceptable and easier to believe than truth, we have turned a corner that redirects our path into a very dark alley where psychopaths find abundant, easy prey.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT   June 11, 2010

This is the best book on ruthless killers -- on criminal psychology -- that I have ever seen. It is clear, easy to read and with almost no professional jargon. It avoids the boring academic approach that most textbooks take. I took a minor in psychology and then later went back to take more courses, intending to be a psychotherapist. I spent some time as a student therapist and finally decided I didn't want to spend my life in those little rooms with those people with their problems. Now I teach English and write big mainstream novels with crime elements. The psychology of the characters is the most interesting thing to me. I'm currently working on a novel about a ruthless killer, so this book is perfect. I recommend it highly.
