Product Description A ground-breaking book on the needs and issues of girls with attentional problems: why they are often undiagnosed, how they are different from boys, and what their special needs are in school, in their social world and at home. Don't bother purchasing this book. It bogs you down with stats and other unrelated things that don't help you really understand ADHD or girls with ADHD. Your time is better spent walking around a park with your daughter talking with her.
Undestanding my 4 1/2 year old daughter August 10, 2009 Gregory Waters 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
We recently found out that my daughter has AD/HD. The doctor recommended several books to read and while searching we found "Understanding Girls With AD/HD". After reading the other books including this we both agree that this book has given us the most understanding of our daughter and her needs. Most books are geared more to discuss boys with their needs because this type of issue seems more prevalent in boys. However after reading this we understand that it is not more prevalent in boys just easier to see since boys are more prone to aggressive behavior.
The book like all others was geared a little more to the advanced ages, but there were several sections open for the younger groups. The insight we received has help to explain to family and friends that she is not a bad kid, she just needs different approaches and in most times is higher functioning academically. With the approaches recommended we have been able to make strides her communication and recognize signs of her needs.
I would recommend this to anyone with daughters recently diagnosed or those who are at a loss currently.
Great for Teachers too! July 15, 2009 Lisa OReilly 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who deals with children, especially teachers and day care providers. As a parent of a young girl whom I believe to have ADD, this book is a wonderful resource. Girls are often over looked or misdiagnosed for AD/HD. The information contained in this book helps in knowing what to look for and how to help the child. Not doing so can prove to be detrimental to their development and self esteem.
Understand girls with ADHD June 5, 2009 L. Miller (Detroit, MI) Great info about the uniqueness of girls with ADHD. Finally found a resource that speaks to me, and helps me to better understand what my daughter's stuggles are like.
