Product Description Here's the 7th Edition of the most complete, easy-to-use resource on how to develop practical, individual care plans! It's really 2 books in 1. The first half provides the diagnostic information needed to create a care plan; the second half covers the safe prescription and administration of psychotropic medications. And, the concepts can be applied to a variety of healthcare settings...from inpatient hospitalization and the outpatient clinic...to home health and private practice. This title features: an introduction to Concept Mapping in Chapter 1; Care Map Care Plans; 7 new Appendices including Comparison of Developmental Theories, Stages of Grief, Psychosocial Therapies and Electroconvulsive Therapy; and, latest NANDA nomenclature. It is organized by DSM-IV and NANDA Diagnoses. Nursing diagnoses and interventions include the definition, possible etiologies ("Related to..."), defining characteristics ("Evidenced by..."), objectives broken down to show long- and short-term goals, interventions with selected rationales, and desired patient outcomes/discharge criteria. Each drug classification lists background assessment data, predisposing factors, symptomatology, and nursing diagnoses and nursing interventions. Unit on psychotropic drug classifications covers anti-anxiety agents, antidepressants, antimanic agents, antipsychotics, antiparkinsonian drugs, sedative hypnotics, and central nervous system stimulants. It also features indications, route, and dosage for individual drugs, not just for classifications.

great quick reference June 26, 2010 meljo this is a nice little book with lots of information, I keep it in my clipboard @work and use it frequently as a refresher for topics I've long since forgotten. I would recommend this for anyone who wants basic information on psych issues.
Decent care plans March 24, 2010 Mary S. (Nashville, TN USA) We really didn't use this book in Mental Health a whole lot. Plus I don't know how helpful it would be to someone who is a little more experienced and choosing to go into the field. It has decent care plans and is an excellent resource for psych drugs. Davis Drug Guide doesn't necessarily cover 100% of potential side effects in psych drugs. This goes into a little more depth. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I don't really know if it was worth the price for my level. I could have gotten a comparable care plan from a more general care plan book (like Taylor and Sparks), and I think the drug information may have turned up on a good Google search. If you have a really intense need to write incredibly involved care plans for your class, this might fit the bill. Otherwise just go and buy a good general care plan book used and save some money.
Not bad January 13, 2010 Adam G I am a junior in my BSN program. I had my 13 week clinical rotation in Psych and enjoyed it quite a bit. I bought this book after my experience in class and clinical for future reference. I like the book a lot. Compared to other "clinical companions" like the ones Mosby puts out, this one is organized a bit differently.
In my opinion, I think that the headings and fonts used could be clearer. I just think that the layout of how things are organized could be clearer. I think also that there could have been more clinical manifestations when it comes to the different psychiatric disorders. Otherwise, good summary and I like it a lot.
Quick Reference Book November 4, 2009 Rashun J "Lilly" (OKC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book to have something I could carry to work. It's succinct and easy to use. I carry it in my purse when I'm working and I can usually find what I'm looking for if it's psychiatric and mental health. The appendix includes tools for mental status assessments, assigning nursing dx to client behaviors and Gaf scores. If you're looking for a quick, handy resource this book will fit the bill.
Great Condensed Option September 11, 2009 T. Wright (CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is for our psych rotation I have actually used it yet but plan to. Other students I know say it is a great book. It got here on time too.
